After talking to Earl about the growing spam problem we have decided that
it is better to leave the list closed to subscribers. Non-subscribers
will still be able to post, but their messages will need to be approved
by the listowner.
Unfortunately, this change won't take place until Aug. 17th, as I will
be out of town from tomorrow through that date. I don't want to make
changes to the list right before leaving, as I'll be be telephone-free
for a week and a half.
I've also turned on administrivia for the list, so subscribe/unsubscribe
requests are detected and ignored. For those of you who wanted to
know how to unsubscribe, here's the instructions (which were sent to
you when you subscribed anyhow):
To subscribe or unsubscribe, send mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
with the body of your message containing the single word
'unsubscribe'.
Until the list becomes closed, please do not flood our ISP or the
University of Illinois with spam notification. Besides, the only
address that really matters is the point of origination. Everything
that you send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] about it is just going to come back
to me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), but by going through a big long
chain of people ([EMAIL PROTECTED], etc.) I'm on the list, so I
get to see everything anyway. I don't want to sound harsh, but
the list is provided as a service. If you absolutely can't stand
the spam, then I suggest unsubscribing until the 17th. Otherwise
just grin and bear it.
