Compiling the kernel + "doing stuff with the kernel", "adding a driver" all
of which have to do with the Linux kernel seem to be commonalities. That,
and 9 out of 14 people responding to the survey use either Debian or Ubuntu.
Combine all of that and you've got ... "compiling a kernel the Debian way".
I.E. configuring and compiling a Linux kernel and building it into a Debian
or Ubuntu package for easy installation + removal. Perhaps some words and/or
detail about how to minimize the number of dynamic modules, loading/unloading
modules, minimizing kernel options, etc.

There's online documentation that exists already specifically about how to
do this,
    http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-common-tasks.html

and there's a good book "Linux Kernel in a Nutshell" by Greg Kroah-Hartman
which is freely available to explain how to configure the kernel, figure out
which drivers are needed, loading/unloading drivers, etc.
    http://www.kroah.com/lkn/

There's only two weeks until the next meeting, so I don't know if anyone
wants to try to tackle giving this particular talk. My laptop isn't suitable
(LCD backlight is busted and I've tried to replace it -- OMG is that not
fun!), and demonstrating this realistically requires root access to show
which packages for compiling the source are required, etc, so I'm not in a
good position to attempt to give the talk myself.
But at least I wanted to point out the above resources for those that would
like to look more into it.
