Rather than using a WYSIWYG word processor, for a /book/ I would suggest
learning to use a "markup language" such as LaTeX. It can create beautifully
formatted books with footnotes, citations, index, table of contents,
etc. There
are contributions (packages) for various print-related operations all
the way to
four color separations, crop marks, and such things. How is this book to be
published? Will you be sending PostScript files to a commercial printer?
Will
you be using an editor and publisher (who may want to format it their own
way anyway) who might want a special markup?
