MHVLUG is proud to announce our February 2008 meeting: DBUS with Ruby.
DBUS is a relatively new invention in the Linux Desktop. It is a
communication bus that Linux applications can use to send events and
export functions. Examples of events:
* Network Interface goes up
* Pidgin receives a message
* Screensaver activates
Examples of functions:
* Set pidgin status
* Set rhythbox tracks
With a little scripting you can start connecting your Linux
applications together in the ways you want, especially given bindings
from easy to learn languages like Ruby. The talk will examine some of
how DBUS works, give a very brief Ruby crash course, and show some
example uses of DBUS with Ruby example code.
*NOTE VENUE CHANGE*
This meeting will take place at Computer Science Classroom as Vassar
College, in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Wednesday, February 6, from 6pm -
8pm. A nice map to the location, including parking can be found here:
https://wiki.cs.vassar.edu/people/priestdo/tips/find_cs
All meetings are *free* and open to the public, and everyone from all
levels of expertise and interest in Linux and Open Source Software are
encouraged to attend (and bring a friend or two)! In addition, after
each meeting ends everyone is welcome to join in on an informal dinner
gathering at the Palace Diner (http://www.thepalacediner.com/) on
Washington St. This is a great opportunity to interact with members
of the local Linux community, and a forum where questions and comments
are strongly welcomed.

Hope to see you all there!
