As suggested NX is probably the best solution, but if that does not
work for you, you could try x11vnc with the -clip, -id or -sid options.

With x11vnc, a vncviewer at work and ssh you could ssh into your home
machine, launch x11vnc on your home machine and then display that
screen on your machine at work.  With -clip, -id or -sid option to
x11vnc you can export only the region of your screen or window with
pidgin. (Unless pidgin opens other windows when it runs, I don't use
it so I don't know.  If it does you might just want to export the a
large chunk of the display, or -sid may do the trick, you'll need to
play a bit to find out.)

The x11vnc man page gives an example on how to do the ssh tunnel, but
you will want to go over that man page as there are many options that
if used properly can take a lot of the headaches out of the procedure.
