I am not using the nfs "soft" option.  I would be curious to see if
this in fact solves your problem.  Please let us know.  I'd also still
like to know what ssh reports is going on during that initial
negotiation.  What does ssh say about the remote host key?  What does
ssh say about the negotiation for the user key?  Does it confirm that
it is not seeing that the remote key is not there (as would be the
case if the drive is not yet mounted)?

Just curious.
