   Hahaha...  turns out you *were* specific.  ;-)  Geez.

   If the new user did get added, then the failure must be of either adding a 
group for the new user (in /etc/group), or a shadow password 
(in /etc/shadow).
   Try grepping for 'groupadd' and 'passwd' in /var/log/auth.log and see what 
shows up.
