I'm nearing phone upgrade time, and as I know phones have come up at
dinner, I figured this might be a good place to ask. Beyond the phone
being a phone, I also really need the phone to be usable as a modem from
Linux. I'm actually writing this email right now using my current cell
phone as a ppp uplink for my laptop. (I also just realized this might
make a good lightning talk.)

I'm only interested in sprint as a carrier, for a number of reasons. So
anyone with info on phones that work with sprint well in this way would
be appreciated.

There is no silver bullet. Plus, werewolves make better neighbors
than zombies, and they tend to keep the vampire population down.
