[mhvlug] Linux Mint 6 Felicia - slow garbled mp3 playback

I haven't yet found this problem described and a solution for it by Google-ing. 
Not sure if it's a Debian or Ubuntu thing. Anyone else experience slow garbled 
mp3 playback on Ubuntu or other Ubuntu-based distro?
