As a developer that often has to deal with the various lock downs in
certain systems, be mindful that security is often in direct
contradiction to productivity, if not done carefully.
Locked down environments are fine for legitimately fixed function
workers, but security that prevents people from doing their jobs is
counter productive to the environment. We've now added 7 days and
counting to resolving a bug at work because we can't get a machine with
the right hardware and software in the right security domain in which 2
individuals in different countries and organizations can log in at the
same time. "Dear BSO... I hate you."
That being said, for that automated management and "self-healing" bit,
I've been spending some time with puppet recently, and am pretty
impressed. It would be a great talk idea if anyone wanted to dive in on it.

There is no silver bullet. Plus, werewolves make better neighbors
than zombies, and they tend to keep the vampire population down.
