Greetings group Based on suggestions given here a week or so ago, I downloaded Fedora 10 and am using a Live CD to try it out on my IBM Laptop. I have one initial issue I am having trouble working out.
The networking system sees my wireless LAN just fine, but I cannot connect to it. I have VZ Fios with VZ's supplied wireless router - Actiontec Model MI424WR. The initial router WEP settings have 64/128 bit and 128/104 settings. Fedora presents "wep 40/128-bit key" or "wep 128-bit passphrase". Am I correct in thinking that these two items are, as they stand, not compatible? I set my router security to "None" and basically set an open network. I tried to set Fedora to None - and did so, but when I connect, I am presented with an "Authentication Required" box that says "Wireless Security" and has a single selection - "None" - and I cannot get it to even try to connect. There is no "Connect" button on this window. I set the router to WPA and set a key phrase, the PDA works there (though I am not quite sure why!) but Fedora, though it tries, and the little network link ball turns green, fails to connect. I found and disabled the firewall, same issue. ifconfig -a shows a link on wlan0, inet6, a long odd-looking hex address that does not appear to be anything like a 192.168-style address I might expect - even converted to hex (C0.A8), and I cannot ping the router from the laptop (network not reachable) Am I missing something rather basic? This IS my very first excursion into Fedora - and one of the reasons I chose Kubuntu earlier - it "just worked" :-) And... My son's new computer just arrived - I am going to have to put SOMETHING on it real soon now! Thanks! Jack -- Eschew obfuscation and pompous prolixity. Light a man a fire, he is warm for the night.
