I found GRUB to cause failure on mixed disk systems. SATA/SCSI caused major damage, and SATA/USB was causing confusion on bootup. I switched to LILO and the problem is gone.
Just something to try.

I presume you think this might address the warm restart/IDE devices still inacessable problem, I can't imagine it would have an effect on the initial disappearance of the devices.

Am I missing something ?

I'm willing to change boot loaders if it's likely to solve the problem.

Booting with GRUB never finished with the SATA/SCSI mix-SATA/USB caused the USB drives to be considered SCSI and the verbose screen showed a failure to mount them. Since it was easy to switch bootmanagers in Mandriva I tried it and the problem vanished. This happened on an AMD64/DFI setup and a IntelPentium 4/Intel setup. I thought you might want to give it a try as it could not hurt
anything and could be changed back just as fast.
