I presume you think this might address the warm restart/IDE devices
still inacessable problem, I can't imagine it would have an effect on
the initial disappearance of the devices.
Am I missing something ?
I'm willing to change boot loaders if it's likely to solve the problem.

Booting with GRUB never finished with the SATA/SCSI mix-SATA/USB caused
the USB drives to be
considered SCSI and the verbose screen showed a failure to mount them.
Since it was easy to switch
bootmanagers in Mandriva I tried it and the problem vanished. This
happened on an AMD64/DFI
setup and a IntelPentium 4/Intel setup. I thought you might want to give
it a try as it could not hurt
anything and could be changed back just as fast.
