If you want to turn off gdm, it's actually not that hard.
/etc/init.d/gdm stop, and you will no longer have the graphical log in.
However, if you are still using this machine as a desktop I'm not sure
why you'd want to do that. gdm just hanging around isn't using any
processing time, and only a small amount of memory.
Is there a particular reason you are trying to turn it off?
