Folks,

I'm visiting NY from Florida, where I'm friendly with the local linux
group - http://mlinux.org/

About a year ago, I set up my father with a new laptop, and his old
desktop is collecting dust on the desk - my mother is ready to put it in
the trash, but I'm doing my best to intervene.

The PC works fine - it's just old. The OS was Windows 98, and an early
attempt to put Win2K on it (by me) was not successful, but I never
investigated why, or tried again with XP.

It was once an office machine, with a working Ethernet connection - my
father used the dial-up modem, and then when he got FIOS to his house,
the Ethernet plug worked just fine and he continued to use the PC on
FIOS for about 6 months.

The breaking straw for his upgrade was that people started sending him
PDFs that he couldn't open - the newest readers wouldn't install on 98,
and he couldn't upgrade the OS - nor is he a high-tech user who needs to
spend that much time mucking with hardware.

However, I KNOW that the local LUG group must have some hardware muckers
... anyone looking for an extra web/print/email server? I'm sure this
machine would drop in nicely as a mostly-headless server.

My father is in the Mahopac area, and I'll be making at least one more
trip to Stewart airport before I head back.

If anyone is interested in repurposing this machine, drop me a line by
e-mail or phone.

Happy Holidays!
Sean P
