I don't know this from personal experience, but a friend of mine that does computer repair commonly runs into this problem. The reason is that the Windows XP code is for a /certain version/ of Windows XP that is within a limited build number range. In other words, you need to use the /original/ Windows XP disk that was used to install the machine if you want to use the same XP code. If you're instead trying to use a more modern version of XP, it won't work. Since this is an IBM Thinkpad, you have to use the reinstall media that came with the system -- and that detects a certain version of hardware or it won't install, and if it detects a mismatch due to the motherboard replacement, then that won't work either. What can I say... Windows stinks like this because it was designed to. -- Chris -- Chris Knadle [email protected] _______________________________________________ Mid-Hudson Valley Linux Users Group http://mhvlug.org http://mhvlug.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mhvlug Upcoming Meetings (6pm - 8pm) MHVLS Auditorium Apr 7 - Nagios May 5 - Android Jun 2 - June 2010 Meeting
