I don't know this from personal experience, but a friend of mine that does 
computer repair commonly runs into this problem.  The reason is that the 
Windows XP code is for a /certain version/ of Windows XP that is within a 
limited build number range.  In other words, you need to use the /original/ 
Windows XP disk that was used to install the machine if you want to use the 
same XP code.  If you're instead trying to use a more modern version of XP, it 
won't work.

Since this is an IBM Thinkpad, you have to use the reinstall media that came 
with the system -- and that detects a certain version of hardware or it won't 
install, and if it detects a mismatch due to the motherboard replacement, then 
that won't work either.

What can I say... Windows stinks like this because it was designed to.
