Okay, now I get it. File size, not partition size.
I guess I don't save big videos.
I know the drives work mac & pcs; I move files to and from linux via the lan.

  Clyde,

FAT32 has a hard 4GB file size limit. There's no way around it, it's not
"only in XP."

You COULD use exFAT, Extended FAT. Windows XP/Server 2003 w/ SP2, Vista w/
SP1, and Win7 support this filesystem. On the downside this means that you
can't write to the drive with Linux. There may be some legal issues with
getting exFAT support in Linux. exFAT has nothing to do with FAT32 really, and
can not be mounted as FAT32 like you could mount an ext3 filesystem as ext2.

  I'm not so smart, but I do have 4 hds 500gb & 750 [3 ext fw8 & usb2(sata), 1
also has sata ext + 1 internal ata]formatted in fat32 & the external ones work
cross platform. I defrag regularly.

I dont think it can be Fat32 then since isn't it 2 ^ 32 = 4 gig and if it
isn't Fat32 it won't work in Windows so why not use ext. So I assume it's
probably a modified Fat listed within the link
