I was sent the following from a friend:
http://www.antonline.com/p_Memorex--32020013358--BD-R-4x--15Pk-Spindle-_524096.htm These are $1.80 each which equals $0.7 cents per gigabyte. If you were comparing that to a 4.7 GB DVD, it would cost $0.32 cents per disk. Now here is where it gets interesting... I found a site that is selling 2x discs, but in the 50GB capacities for only $14 for an entire cake box. The speed is obviously slow, but you would likely never have a need to use the entire box. http://www.supermediastore.com/product/u/panasonic-dual-layer-blu-ray-disc-2x-50gb-in-cake-box?utm_source=googleBase&utm_medium=pcsite&utm_content=Blu-ray+Media This other vendor has a similar low price on 8x discs. I'm not sure what the deal here is, because most of the standard Google results are MUCH more expensive. http://www.tapesandmore.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=164_34&custid=0f4ea883e17908249b77313c7507385e So, this leads to an interesting question for myself. I have no interest in trying to duplicate BD discs onto this format due to the massive file sizes and the need to use authoring software to recreate the java menus. But I have a HUGE HUGE interest in backing up my collection of DVD-Rs into a much smaller box of BD-Rs. This would do just that. Plus if I put everything onto five 50GB discs, I can mail it to you for safe keeping. It appears that they are keeping the REAL low prices for bulk purchases of fifty or more. The consumer pricing for a single disc or one case seems to be all that's available through most establishments. Question to the group: 1. Can anyone comment on a blu-ray Drive under Linux? Any gotcha's that need to be looked out for? I keep reading as long as is uses MMC (Multi-Media Commands) it should work with k3B. 2. Are the deals above legit? That is has anyone been able to purchase blank BR-DL ( 50Gb ) in that price range? As you can see for that price one can backup 1Tb formidably having both remote and local backup. ( please note Internet backup of 1-2Tb is NOT affordable, not what I am talking about here ) Joe
