Well Len, before you get nostalgic, remember that there was also a lot of civil unrest going on at that time due to the Vietnam war. It's also when the Apollo moon flights were going on too, so there was also a lot of good technical innovation happening. And, of course, that's when Star Trek was new and there was no need to call it "the original series". As for the date error programatically, I'm surprised the date came out to be the day right before the start of most computer clocks, which usually start at Jan 1 1970.
