Correct, all I needed to do was start postfix and the
"postdrop: warning: unable to look up public/pickup: No such file
or directory"
message went away. I don't know if the directory was created on first
start or what.
I continue to receive the following error when trying to send mail to an
internet email account:
postfix/smtp[5034]: 16FCB6862A: to=<[email protected]>, relay=none,
delay=77542, delays=77532/0.13/10/0, dsn=4.4.3, status=deferred (Host or
domain name not found. Name service error for name=us.ibm.com type=MX:
Host not found, try again)

You didn't have to fix the "postdrop: warning: unable to look up
public/pickup: No such file or directory" problem? Sending mail
shouldn't throw errors, especially that one, just because Postfix is not
running. The expected behavior would be nothing at all, the command
would complete successfully, but nothing would be delivered until such
time as Postfix were started.
