That's probably a good first course of action -- which will make a backup of 
what you can get in case the drive fails totally.

>From there, if you have data on a corrupted ext2/ext3/ext4 filesystem, you 
might also consider trying debugfs.

If you believe the HD might not be having hardware failure, then you might 
also try some of the low-level disk utilities to see "just how far gone" the 
thing is.
