Rumor has it that there will be a color nook released next week. I'd wait. I'd also suggest the archos tablets that I recommended a couple of weeks ago. They are like an ipad but at a lower cost with an android os. Since your commute is relatively short your eyes shouldn't strain from the backlight. I have both an ipad and kindle (1 st gen) the ipad has lots of functionality and makes the kindle look like a toy, but the kindle provides a better reading experience because it's lighter and easier to hold, the ipad excels as a reader in low light situations because of the backlight.
