If you're looking for a personal file server then a virtual server
isn't a great idea. Also don't forget to calculate in the cost of
power and replacement hardware when comparing costs.

If you're just looking for something to develop on and bounce IRC then
there are cheaper options than Linode. One that I've heard good
things about:

http://prgmr.com/xen/

The 512MB plan is $20 on Linode and $12 for Prgmr. Also Prgmr goes
down to $10.90 a month if you prepay six months. The difference is
that Linode has a nicer control panel, twice the transfer per month
and Linode will handhold you more. Prgmr will help but won't handhold
if it becomes clear you don't know your way around a Linux install.

Also keep in mind that laptop hard drives are not expected to run 24/7
and probably have a shorter life span.
