Open office and MS Office will never be compatible in my opinion.  This is
painfully obvious when you have spreadsheets that have macros written in
visual basic or word files with tables or other "advanced" formatting.

But to get back to your main point these types of things might be better
served in a workshop type get together rather than the normal meetings.
There have been several hackithons and the principle could be applied to
things like gimp, inkscape, open office, desktop and server setups etc.  I
would gladly go to these in addition to the current meetings to share and
learn but you would need an audience and a place.
