Well, I've always wondered that myself, because (even without cute transitions) it leads to this sort of thing: http://www.norvig.com/Gettysburg/index.htm I give talks from brutally simple PDFs (produced, oddly enough, with OOo Impress) and find that: 1) Relatively few people fall asleep 2) Folks like the material & presentation But, with that in mind, a fast fade-and-switch is certainly the least awful transition if you must have them.
