The hour before the meeting could also be used for "hack time" or for helping 
others do installs, both of which we've previously done at a different 
location on a particular day.

Another idea that's been done at both NYLUG and LILUG is a programming 
"special interest group" meeting.  [To start off with LILUG started with PHP 
and NYLUG started with Python, but both groups eventually adopted an "any 
language is fine" methodology.]
