The first rule of being a doctor is not to make the patient any worse. ;-) So... first thing I suggest is just to take your time with this and to stay calm. You haven't lost data, and this is fixable without needing a reinstall. Even if you think you've stepped on critical system files this is fixable. A reinstall will work too if that's really what you want to do -- that's up to you.

To get access to your files in the meantime I suggest using a LiveCD of some kind and then using that to mount the partition with your data on it in order to get access to it, transfer it, etc.
