If you're able to boot a LiveCD that gets to a graphical screen, another trick you can do is to examine the /etc/X11/xorg.conf that it creates for itself, mount the root partition on your laptop, and then copy that file onto the hard disk on the laptop. [I suggest making a backup of the old xorg.conf file first, of course.]
If Synaptic makes a log of package additions/removals/purges, look through the log to see if perhaps some of the xserver- packages may have been removed or if perhaps kdm was removed without also installing gdm.
