I just put Ubuntu on my work macbook the other day. No issues at all. You will want to install reFIT https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook has information about hardware/ubuntu version combinations https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MactelSupportTeam/AppleIntelInstallation has generic installation information, including about installing rEFIt. I highly recommend making it a dual boot in case you want to run things that will work on MacOS and not on Linux. You can make the macos partition relatively small through Bootcamp (if you have a new enough version of 10.x) or their disk partitioning tool.
