My 2 guesses:

   1) The internet is extremely vulnerable. Any login or search can be
sniffed by someone (without any knowledge of hacking) fairly easily without
SSL. This pose's a huge security concern for people using Google's product.
A lot of us probably search things we don't want anyone knowing about
regardless if that information is captured by someone you don't know.

   2) It can be Google's way of promoting of a shift in web standards and
development. The flaws of the internet have been relatively hidden until the
release of Firesheep and other vulnerability programs. Good web practice
should always include SSL (the major issues being overhead and cost :[ ) to
protect users and any of their information.

Vincent Smith
