I personally would say that if you can and would use some of the discarded
hardware, go for it. I just lost my primary box last week (I THINK the
power supply went, but I haven't had time to perform the surgery yet) and
I'm not too proud to give a new home to someone's retired hardware.
Chances are, they're dumping stuff that's newer than what I'm running.
Since I've always pieced together my computers, it's just a different
source for me (normally upgrading a single component at a time through
buying something cheap, or {when lucky} getting equipment the company I'm
working for is replacing). Last night I met a former manager at the
NYJavaSIG meeting and she gave me her old laptop (which showed a system
date of Aug 2006 when I tried it out at home) and an external Jazz Drive
with about a dozen discs. The laptop currently has Win ME, Win NY, and Red
Hat 7.? Installed. I don't know yet if the battery will hold a charge, but
I plan to put the latest Linux that will run on it.
