There are lots of ways to have git hosting, including doing it yourself. The point I was trying to make around github was that it is *a* center of gravity in open source [1] and it is one of the first stops future employers look in the software space [2].

For your open source development, I personally think you should stay away from hosting services that let you have private repositories. It's way too easy to say to yourself "oh, well, that's not quite ready yet, I'm not going to make it public." Push early, push often, make it public.
