So plans are still coming together for meetings in February, March and April. The website will be updated late this afternoon assuming upgrades go well, or sometime tomorrow morning. However, for March we're going to be doing a desktop environment shootout and need some people to step up. It'd be nice to assign one environment to each person and give them 10 minutes to talk about said environment and hopefully show it off as well. There has been a lot of change in this area in the past year or so, so there should be lots to talk about. Sean Dague has already volunteered to cover Unity, but I need people to step up for one of the following (and feel free to tell me someone should cover one I haven't thought of):
- KDE - Gnome / Gnome Shell - MGSE / Cinnamon - XFCE and/or LXDE - maybe *box? (openbox, fluxbox, blackbox....) I'm sure there are more but those are the big players. Let's try and steer away from Windows or Mac desktop replacements (they exist, like blackbox for windows) and focus on environments available for the Open Source environments (Linux, FreeBSD....). There have been a lot of changes in desktop environments recently, and it seems like the space is gearing up for a few more. I'm looking forward to this talk as it should shed light on what's going on and provoke good discussion which leads to a pretty good social atmosphere for the anniversary meeting. Drop me a note if any of this interests you. -- Ben
