I checked the i7 4 core3.4-3.8 ghz price. Around $300.
It has 4 x 256k of L2 cache, and 8MB of L3 cache, 95 watts.
The AMD Phenom X4, 3.6 ghz, 4 x 512k of L2 cache (more than i7),
6MB of L3 cache (2MB less than i7), 125 watts, not 95, around $130.
The AMD X6 at 2.7 ghz, 6 x 512k L2, 6MB of L3, and 95 watts, at $150 or
so. This is not the one I got. I got the 3.3-3.7 ghz x6 for
3 out of 4 machines here, for around $300 each, some time ago,
but now they seem to be out of stock at the sites I checked.
I also got an opteron 2.0 ghz x8, in order to have more than 32 GB of
memory.
The AMD running in 64 bit mode has 16 general registers, as opposed
to the i7's 8 regiters. AMD in 32 bit mode also only has 8 registers.
The same program, compiled for both 32 and 64 bits, runs from 15 to 25%
faster in 64 bit mode, even if if it isn't doing any 64 bit operations.
So the ghz rating is not as significant as it seems.
The amd cpus also come with virtualization support.
So, why are you now so interested in switching to the intel chips?

Mother board finally fully failed, no POST nothing. I need to replace the

Since I do not want to put good money after bad, I want to move up to Intel
i7 (4 core with 8Gb memory) )with EFI etc.
But since I have been with AMD for the last 10 years or so, I'm a tad bit
out of touch with Intel MB chip-sets and features.
That is what are the virtualization features and or chip-set family to get?
This should go without saying but I ask from a "I'm going to mainly use
Linux and run KVM / Virtualbox etc." angle not a "MS Windows 7 / 8" angle
Don't have to fix this tomorrow, but want to get back in the game at least
by the end of the month or sooner.
PS: there will be no services, just immediate family will be there for the
disposal at the recycling center.
