This is a mostly new presentation, although you'll certainly recognize some of the pictures. I'll quickly describe how DIY 3D printing works, show the Tux Cookie Cutter movie, then present some of the current crop of printers. This time you'll see how different machinery implements the XYZ coordinate system. Then come the *basic* basics of solid modeling, why I use OpenSCAD instead of a conventional drawing program, and why 3D printing makes sense for a guy who builds stuff. With all that in place, we journey from sketches to a Constructive Solid Geometry model to plastic, showing where the traditional notions of CAD & CAM fit into the process. Knowing how CSG *should* work, you'll see when it *doesn't* and, in particular, why 2D mesh modeling programs like Blender & Sketchup have problems with 3D objects. My good old bike helmet mirror provides a closer look at the design phase, plus an intro to the necessary evil of support structures. I'll wrap up with a handful of Things I've Built to show why I can't get along without a 3D printer. The printer (should be) running, so you can once again enjoy that beautiful stepper motor music... NOTE: The talk will be in Hancock HC2023, the castle down the hill from Dyson. You can help justify the move to a larger room by showing up! -- Ed http://softsolder.com _______________________________________________ Mid-Hudson Valley Linux Users Group http://mhvlug.org http://mhvlug.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/mhvlug Upcoming Meetings (6pm - 8pm) Vassar College Jun 6 - Why the Web Needs HTML5 Jul 11 - Mad Science Fair - Open Hardware Expo Aug 1 - Pimp My Network
