Maybe, but you also don't learn as much doing this than fixing the specific 
thing that's broken.  [I consider reinstallation as a general all-around 
solution to problems to be "a bad habit".]

I don't know about "best", but what I usually use is Knoppix.  [I've tried 
other Linux LiveCD distros but for some reason I never like any of them as 
much as I like Knoppix.]  Last time I was at an IEEE meeting discussing 
Windows malware and repair/recovery using Linux, the speaker at the time also 
used Knoppix for this as well.
