xhci is 100% for usb3; the question is does it cover ALL usb3 devices.

Some research and asking around some usb folk I know says "yes"; any
usb3 device should be covered by the xhci driver.

As far as usb3 performance goes - the original post was about a WD
hard drive on usb3.  You'll see some performance boost, you'll
DEFINITELY see some performance boost for operations hitting the
drives cache, but you'll be hitting spindle speeds soon enough for any
large file IO.  Don't expect miracles, but you probably won't be too
disappointed.
