JMeter[1] and ab[2] were always my go tos to so see when a server would fall down. I've heard decent things about BlazeMeter[3] but at that point it's less FOSS and DIY tooling and more buying a professional service.
Running a load test is helpful and all, but if you want to take that data to the next step you should also analysis what your web app is spending it's time on and optimizing that as well. Check out analytics packages like Linode's Longview Apps[4], New Relic[5] and xhprof[6][7].
