Also, do you recommend any good tools?

In the past I've used gpg from the Linux command line,
but because I do most of my day-to-day stuff on a Mac
I've been using GPG Keychain Access and I like it.

GPG is one case where a GUI with menus is a big help,
because there are so many options that with the command
line I find myself browsing the man page every time I want
to do something I don't remember right away.

GPG Keychain Access is actually a part of a suite of tools,
called GPG Suite (from http://gpgtools.org) which also integrates
directly into the Mac mail program, so I can sign messages
or receive encrypted or signed messages with little overhead,
using the mail app I'm already using.   It's open source, but only
supports Mac.
