Ok Ubuntu has not be getting my love as of late. But if you need a Linux Desktop in a VM or older system check out Lubuntu: http://lubuntu.net/
It really has come a long way, the LXDE desktop is tweaked out so well that it's a better experience then XFCE and I would rate it equal to that of Gnome 2.x It's pure Ubuntu so you get all the support you would expect from main line Ubuntu. It's really a true pleasure to use, it just stays out of your way and allows you to run that Linux GUI app along side your terminal sessions effortlessly. To me the measure of a really useful desktop manager is to get out of your way and let you become productive. I am telling you that Lubuntu does accomplish that ( for me at least ) -- Joe /** ** Joseph T Apuzzo ** High-Performance Computing ** GPFS Expert (Linux, Windows, AIX), Linux LPIC-1 ** ** http://www.linkedin.com/in/japuzzo/ ** http://plus.google.com/+JosephApuzzo ** ** PGP / GPG Key # 0xA16E26CF ** FingerPrint: 19A8 44EC F650 782B 6770 BF0E 2DAA 3D75 A16E 26CF **/
