I'm mostly using Linux for a desktop at work, not home. There, I'm
currently using Cinnamon Mint <http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/> 16 (Petra).
Been sticking with Mint for a while now and prefer it to just using Gnome 3
on Ubuntu.

I have two monitors, with four 'virtual desktops' where I usually have
different sets of windows up (i.e. email/browser in one, vmware stuff in
another, a second usually cluttered with terminal windows). I move things
around between them often using the CTRL + ALT + (left or right) shortcuts,
(and switch between the windows with CTRL + (left or right).

I put certain tasks in different windows (away from the email) so I can
work without email distracting me sometimes.

My 'frequent' apps are mostly just browsers & gnome terminal. My email and
most apps I use are web-based. The only non-web based apps I really use
are just those (and the VMWare client via remote desktop, since the web
client is still sluggish and lacking features).
