Announcing the formation of the *MHVLUG-SIG* ( Special Interest Group
) *Professional
Linux*. Meaning when you are compensated for your skill and knowledge of
Linux or related Open Source projects.

*What is it?*
A virtual meeting using Google Hangouts every two weeks to discuss progress
on individual projects and or related topics. Participants ( that chose to
) will present slides on the topic they have chosen and answer questions on
the presentation as goals are achieved. Participants are also encouraged to
blog about there topic, adding it to www.mhvlug.org/planet RSS feed.
Projects are free-form but we strongly encourage them to be related to
Linux or a Open Source project. Projects should have defined achievements,
as the main focus of the meetings are to encourage progress. Presentations
are optional but also encouraged as professionals, we are often required to
share findings with colleagues, as well as in school or on interviews.
Blogging about one's learning experience is a good way to not only share
with the greater group, but also demonstrates the individuals professional
aptitude.

*Who is it for?*
*Those who want to become a Linux Pro*: All that would like to learn about
how Linux is used in production type environments are welcome. Those of us
that have experience with such topics will mentor those whom are looking to
learn. You get what you put it, your mentor will assist as much as you are
willing to go off and do the work that is expected.

*The Seasoned Pro:* For those that know it all, this is an opportunity to
mentor those who are willing to learn and expand there skills. It's your
opportunity to give back. This is a way to demonstrate technical leadership
outside of one's day job ( especially when that job lack the opportunity ).
This is the perfect way to fill in those resume gaps that will attract the
annotation you desire.

*Everyone else:* This is an open meeting, in that as long as the focus
remains on the projects or production Linux related topics all are welcome
to participate. We encourage projects and topics to emulate a business like
environments so mentors can impart there experience and wisdom in that
context.

*When:* First and Third Sunday nights at 7pm to 8 or 9pm depending on the
agenda.

*Where:* Google hangouts so make sure to have a G+ account
https://accounts.google.com/SignUp and https://plus.google.com/

First meeting will be Sunday May 4th at 7pm therefore please send me your
Google ID ASAP so I can add you to the hangout!

First topic will be “Hyper-visors: how to setup your own server farm on
your computer”

Linux users either KVM or ViurtualBox, Windows and Mac users will be
VirtualBox so brush up on KVM <http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Main_Page> and
or VirtualBox <https://www.virtualbox.org/>

Then May 18th 7pm meeting we will discuss our project outlines for those
who will be participating.

As an example my “project” will be getting a working OpenStack cluster
running test jobs and I will investigate different “object storage” options
which I will present and blog about. I am also very interested in learning
LDAP and can work on that as more of a team effort.

For those whom have no clue what to do, you can follow the Red Hat
Certified Engineer http://www.redhat.com/training/certifications/rhce/ aka
RHCE curriculum as an outline of what a professional Linux Administrator is
expected to know. This is because the Hudson Valley Library System does
have the book “RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux certification study guide : exams
(EX200 & EX300) By Michael Jang” Which can be requested. In the back of the
book you will find a CD which contain a PDF version of the book along with
all the example and materials needed.
