MHVLUG is proud to announce our March meeting:
Make with Meteor: Rapid Prototyping of Real-Time, Mobile Web AppsEvery one of us is at heart a 'maker'. We have ideas we want to bring to life, and we want the satisfaction of seeing others use and enjoy the result. While our goals may be different (e.g., health, finance, community engagement, expertise sharing, career or entertainment), we often find that mobile and web platforms provide the tools and exposure needed to take these concepts to the next level. And learning to design and prototype mobile web apps can become an invaluable skill in your maker tool-belt.
However, building a web app today can involve dealing with a teetering stack of technologies (front-end, back-end, database, cloud) and making them work seamlessly together to create a rich user experience and a reliable, scalable deployment. This can be a challenge for the beginner interested in creating a rapid prototype today, but also with a view to making it into a battle-tested product later. Meteor can help.
Meteor is a platform for developing real-time mobile and web applications in a fraction of the time, with built-in tools to support testing and deployment, and a highly-engaged community that provides extensive packages and support to facilitate rapid prototyping. In November 2014, Meteor hit version 1.0, making it officially production-ready.
In this talk, we'll do a quick refresher on Meteor principles, then walk through a simple application that showcases the various concepts and utilities that make Meteor unique. The talk is geared at a beginner audience, but assumes some knowledge of _javascript_ and HTML/CSS.
The meeting space opens up at 5pm for pre meeting general discussion, question asking, show and tell, and setup. All are welcome to join. If you are planning on using the projector for your lightning talk, please arrive at 5:30 to ensure we can work out any kinks with the projector prior to the meeting. The meeting will take place at Rockefeller Hall 200, Vassar College on Wednesday, March 4th at 6 pm. All meetings are free and open to the public, and everyone from all levels of expertise and interest in Linux and Open Source Software are encouraged to attend (and bring a friend or two)! After each meeting ends everyone is welcome to join in on an informal dinner gathering at the Palace Diner on Washington St. This is a great opportunity to interact with members of the local Linux community, and a forum where questions and comments are strongly welcomed. For more details, including maps and directions, please see the meeting page. Show your support for MHVLUG by RSVPing at our Meetup Page. |
