Alternator brush&ring lifetime tends be rated in amp-hours rather than miles so 
typically it's more like 50K city miles and 200K highway miles with the 
headlights off, maybe half that with the headlights on.

  Hmmm... I wonder about that, actually, as my original 1995 alternator now has 
about 202K miles on it and seems to be putting out the same voltage as when 
new.  I wonder, though, if perhaps my charging system would work BETTER in some 
way if the brushes were replaced, or if the alternator itself was replaced.
