I had an engine builder put a short block together with a rough cut  
still on the bores and it essentially sand the rings down. Super low  
compression and an oil that looked like a golden metallic paint. Have  
you looked at the oil? It's painfully obvious when you drag a finger  
nail along the bore/wall.
