No, if it's coming out of the vc, it would be rings. Air can't get from cyl
to the guides without getting past the valves. If the valves were bad, you
would hear it at the tailpipe or throttle body, as it's much easier for the
air to go there than through valve guides, no matter how bad. I would want
to hear each spot, but given the rest of the description, it probably is
rings. Pull the engine, measure things up and replace rings or rings and
pistons if clearances are off. And rebore or rehone cylinders.

I'm not an expert here but if the air is coming out of the cam cover I would
think the problem could be valve guides too.

All I'm saying is before I started taking an engine apart or out I would
want to know for sure what I going to try to fix is really the problem.

I'm guessing he was asking you to listen for the air because that would tell
you rings or valves.

from a previous msg

...but was told the oil pan/block are being pressureied and leaking out from
the valve cover area (writing that, it doesnt sound right but i believe that
is correct).

point being, the valves and head gasket are good. which leaves pistons/cyl
walls or cracked block, right?

doesnt this answered the "where is the air leaking to" question. i trust
the shop and i dont understand what additional info my doing another leak
down would show . what am i missing here?

thanks,
peter
