If that were the case the chip would also lose data when the battery was left
'connected'.

Dam Dudes....
You totally overlook the possibility, that the chip may be faulty, and not
typical..

And there are no "other" sources of ground. There is only one cable which
attaches to the negative battery terminal. When you disconnect that cable,
there can be absolutely zero current flow through any circuit in the car. It
wouldn't matter if you were to drive a 50 foot long copper rod into the earth
and run a piece of welding cable from it to the chassis of the car, the engine
block, and the gnd terminal(s) of the Link itself. When the engine is not
running, the battery is the only source of electrical potential in the car.* If
there is no connection to the battery's negative terminal, the loop is broken
and there can be no current flow anywhere.
(*) Technically, the airbag control unit has a reserve power source
consisting of a large capacitor built in, but it's diode-isolated from the rest
of the car. Current cannot feed out of it except to the airbag controller,
sensors, and detonator.
Hey, I was grasping at straws. I've asked the listers because I have no
explanation as to why the non-default tuning gets erased. This has been the
norm for my LINK since I've owned it.
As this is apparently NOT the norm for other LINK owners, I withdraw the
question.
