Here's a data point for you. I have a mechanically dead stock '91 and a '91
FMII with Link. Both cars have hardtops and split duty as highway commuters.
The stock car rides on 195 section width tires, the FMII on 215. The stock
cars gets about 32 MPG when driven lightly, ~70 MPH cruise, The FMII car gets
30-31. The FMII car has a 4:10 Torsen as well, and is wired for sequential
injection. YMMV.

It is a tall engine. I believe one of the Jeep Liberty bellhousings can be
used to convert it to RWD as it was the base engine for a while.
The Neon gets good milage compared to the Miata primarily from ECU tuning and
somewhat from the fact it is FWD. You would have to adapt the Neon ECU as
running it on the Miata ECU would give you the same milage issues. My opinion
is not to spend the money and time to convert to a Neon engine but get an ECU
and tune the existing Miata engine. If you insist on a swap the Protege had a
SOHC 1.8 that drops in and accomplishes the same thing. You would still need
an ECU.
Hey I wonder if the neon motor would fit as a swap? That would be 45MPG
easy, and more power and lots more torque. And you can beat the snot out of it
just as much.
Seriously, wonder if the dimensions work out.
