Yep. Our old 540i gets 27 on the highway and 22 around town with a
decent sized v8. We're getting ready to stuff an LS1 into our 2002 Miata
(Elvis) and I fully expect over 30 mpg.

A few weeks a go I participated in a real world fuel economy test where
we drove a number of brand new V-8 luxury cars over a 70 mile test loop.
We did a mix of freeeway and surface streets and did 4 loops switching
cars every loop. The cars included BMW 5 & 7 series, Mercedes E & S
class, a couple Lexus', and one prototype that I can't name. The champ
was a Lexus at over 26mpg and even the big merc got about 24mpg. There
is something to be said about cruising along at 1500 rpm.

You guys make me laugh! The cheapest regular petrol near me
here in the
        UK:

The Highest price in this area: 119.9p
The Average price in this area: 116.3p
The Lowest price in this area: 113.9p

That's per litre, so doing the math for you, that's $8.52 per US
gallon.

And everyone is still driving the same 4x4s and performance cars
just as
        much as they ever did...

Those 60 hp/60 mpg cars won't help you when a teenager gives you
the
finger at the lights in their 70 hp car!

        :-)

Instead of a calculator, I have a spreadsheet. At the top I
punch in
constants like weekly miles driven by me and wifey, and gas cost
per
        gallon.

Then I have 3 cars, my 19mpg Ranger, her 28Mpg Miata, and the
~45Mpg Geo
Metro that will prob cost me $600 all told when it's on the road
        (hopefully).

I also have a column of round trip destinations, and 3 columns
for the 3
        cars.

        Orlando = $560  $370  $230  respectively Wifes Commute = $11.00
$7.50
$4.60 Almost the same for mine.

By switching my truck for the Metro, I save $142/month.

If I sell the truck for $1700, and spend $1100 on a Dodge Neon
to do my
towing, then the savings begin immediately, but only about
$100/mo
because of the insurance on 3 cars. That's still $1200 per
year.

It's not huge, but our budget is fairly tight so it all helps.

Because people are stupid and don't know how to use a calculator
<G>.
These idiots are pissing me off because they are keeping me from
buying
the car that I want (causing the prices to go sky high).
