In the 70's and early 80's, a "Fuel Economy Gauge" was part of the dash
of some cars. All it did was show manifold vacuum in a red, yellow, or
green section of the dial. Green being the most vacuum. We were a
cave-dweller culture back then!

Today's MPG indicators measure actual miles per hour and real-time fuel
flow to calculate MPG. There is often some averaging to make it halfway
sensible as well.

This was part of the American Package of platform shoes, and emissions
control that smelt of rotten eggs and had more vacuum tubes than the
space shuttle has wires that made cars ping badly, then "run on" after
turning off the key.

I checked my mileage today and it is up 50% since I started the
project (30.5 MPG vs 20.0 MPG). I'm pretty psyched about it
because I
have not really spent much time working on the car. It would
seem that
I could possibly get to 40 MPG now instead of the 35 that I had
for a
goal. So far the only mods I have done are removing the SC
(intake is
just a PVC coming 90 degrees out of the manifold with an FM
purchased
K&N filter), pumping the tires up to 50 PSI, and dropping the
Master
Fuel from 100 to 90 (RC 440s). Of course, I have changed my
driving
        habits quite a bit.

Impressive, but you can probably drop the fuel setting a bit more. FM's
"standard" setting for turbo with 550s is 87. You have 440s and now no
FI. Keep in high vacuum when cruising.

If you need aditional encouragement, try adding vac gauge to go with or
replace the boost gauge. I'm not entirely certain, but on cars equipped
with "MPG computers", I think those computers are registering vac
numbers (and probably fuel flow info) on an MPG scale. I use the one in
my Subaru (big 2005 Legacy) when driving that car, and by staying in
high vac I average about 27-28 MPG, where I used to get 23 -24 when not
paying attention. Watch out for tire wear, especially in the center
tread.
