Why would MPG decrease on summer blends? I thought there was more
energy in Gasoline vs. Alcohol, allowing more miles per gallon.

Rolling in neutral is less efficient than rolling in gear. When the
engine is idling, it is using fuel. When you are in gear, off
throttle, fuel is cut off until you get down to about 800 RPM.
Not to mention, it is not as safe to coast with the trannmissin in
neutral due to lack of control (acceleration) in an emergency
maneuver! (Rolling in neutral is one of my pet peeves... I have no
idea where this was taught!)

Brakes are the best invention for slowing down, but in neutral one
loses engine braking, and engine braking provides a greater sense of
control.
The REAL reason MPG goes down when idling is because the car isn't
moving forward, yet the fuel used at idle is included in our MPG
calculation, so the lack of distance lowers the MPG value.
A rich mixture at idle will decrease the MPG more, obviously, so
long Winter warm-ups aren't favorable to achieving high MPG.
Of course, now that its Summer (in reality, not by the calendar) the
fuel has been changed to the Summer blends and our MPG will decrease
anyway.
